Lyrebird College - an education provider for young people with autism - opened a new building for senior students in November last year. L4Life works with the College and their students in developing communication strategies for them to use to help their everyday interactions and learning .
Three Lyrebird students presented at the opening - a very big development in the use of their communication skills that they worked on throughout the year. One student used their Proloquo2Go device (AAC) to introduce the ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ while also flipping pages of a book with the words written on it, as the acknowledgement was read out. Two other students read statements from the Lyrebird students and the Federal Education Minister, Jason Clare.
Principal Julie Kluger was proud of these achievements, sharing the story and updates with us. We are just as proud of the progress made by these, and many other, students at Lyrebird.
"There was no way, in the first two years, I would have ever got a child to stand beside me to do what we did today. When we first opened, we saw our children all in their little separate spaces throughout the school, just doing their own integration. Now they communicate and interact. That's what our education is about," says Julie.
