Secret Agent Society

Secret Agent Society Social Skills Program

The Secret Agent Society (SAS) is an evidence based small group social skills program that helps children between the ages of 8-12 years old develop skills in emotion regulation, developing friendships and navigating social problems.

SAS covers topics including detecting emotions in yourself and others, introducing yourself to someone new, how to cope with bullying, and how to detect the difference between accidents, jokes and nasty deeds. There is a new topic covered each week which builds upon what was learned in the previous week. Although SAS is a set program, Learning for Life facilitators take time and care to adjust the program for each group, spending more time on areas of difficulty, and less time on areas that may not be applicable. SAS utilises various resources to deliver the program, including walkie talkies  board games and a computer game for home practice.

SAS groups meet weekly corresponding with school terms. In addition to group facilitators running student groups, time is also taken to run parent/caregiver groups. This ensures that parents/caregivers are up to date with exactly what children are learning, are being given strategies and are supported through difficulties throughout the program.

Teaching children social skills

SAS teaches children crucial social skills, including how to:
  • recognise emotions in themselves and others;
  • express feelings in appropriate ways;
  • start, continue and end conversations and play activities with others;
  • cope with feelings of anger and anxiety;
  • tell the difference between friendly joking and mean teasing;
  • manage bullying;
  • cope with making mistakes; and
  • handle new situations and ask for help when needed.
